Why Microbes Become Resistant to Antibiotics?

Antibiotics have been commonly used for dealing with bacterial infections of different kinds. However, it has been noted that some of the microbial flora tend to develop resistance to antibiotics. For instance, if a patient has been treated with a particular antibiotic repeatedly, after a series of infection the infection might not respond well to the drug therapy. The resistance of the bacterial flora to antibiotics is becoming a major check point in the treatment of infections with antibiotics.

The major reasons for why microbes tend to develop resistance to antibiotics are:-

Improper dosages

Misuse or over dose of antibiotics

Increasing usages

A course of treatment with antibiotics whether it is the branded version of the drug or the generic combinations like generic Amoxil, Ampicillin, Bactrim, Baycip-TZ, Cipro, Flagyl, Zithromax etcetera should be continued as prescribed by the physician. Skipping the dosages will give way for the bacterial flora to replicate with the genetic material that is resistant to the antibiotic that is being taken. If a part of the strain of the bacteria is being killed by a particular antibiotic, then the new strain of bacteria will mutate and replicate with a resistant material in its genes. When this happens the new strain of replicated bacteria will not die and after skipped dosages the remaining antibiotics will not be used to kill the new bacteria and thereby the infection will persist in the system. Therefore, the patient will go to the doctor over again, requiring some alternate prescription.

Well, this does not happen soon. The doctor will require a culture and sensitivity test or a blood culture. This again will eat some time and while all these testing and culture is on you will be still on the same antibiotic to which the bacterial flora might/might not have developed resistance and thereby leading to more suffering and more room for the bacterial to replicate. When the culture test comes back you are changed to a new antibiotic and you have to complete this course over again.

When all this is happening you are meeting up with some extra bills in laboratory expenses, loss of pay because you are off from office, another long course of antibiotic and the infection takes some more time to get better.

To avoid all this havoc you got to better comply with the regulations for antibiotic use in terms of consuming it before or after meals, not skipping them, not consuming over dosages and so on.

There are many instances where parents tend to use specific antibiotics over the counter for their kids, because they feel the physician prescribes the same old stuff over again for every time they visit with them for a specific infection. Well, this is bad indeed, the physician has a track of the past medications in the medical transcript and they know how to alternate between antibiotics. It is dangerous to self prescribe yourself with a particular antibiotic because you have been previously prescribed with a particular drug.
