Viagra and the Religious Christian Right
Many impotent Christian males are reading their Bibles for answers whether it is morally correct to use Viagra. Well, the answer can be deduced from the first books of the Bible particularly in the story of Abraham where he was blessed by God to have a child (Isaac) even at a ripe age of 90. The first book enumerated men who were old enough but were given more children. Enos and Methuselah are just two of the many men who bore more children at such an old age.
God instructed his people to go forth and multiply and it seems that procreation is a divine dogma that man should follow. Erectile dysfunction is contrary to procreation and it hinders man to fulfill the divine duty to procreate and populate the world. It is thus justified for young men suffering from erectile dysfunction to take Viagra to fulfill his duty. How can we spread the word of God when there are no newborns?
Conservative religious groups have attacked the proliferation of viagra and other recreation drugs that promote fornication, premarital sex, unwanted sexual fetishes, immorality, and adultery. However, alcohol like Viagra is also a substance that can improve sexual performance and reduce sexual inhibition. The religious Christian right have few objections with the use of alcohol. Some even go further saying that sex is a gift from God and he may withdraw the same as a punishment or a form of divine wrath. God can get back what he gave. Viagra may be used as a sex enhancer but the drug has more important uses like treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension and high-altitude induced pulmonary edema.
The criticisms should not be centered on the drug alone but its uses. One good example is Misoprostol (Pfizer), the drug is anti-inflammatory drug used to treat stomach ulcer but it is used by some as an abortion agent. It is OK to criticize Misoprostol as an abortion agent but it should be appreciated as an anti-ulcer medicine. Viagra likewise should be applauded as a good PAH treatment medicine and criticized its use as a recreational drug by youngsters.
Ask you pastor first for advice before you buy viagra online. If you are a Catholic, try asking advice first from your parish priest. The use of Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction for married men seems not immoral, but the use of the drug by single men may seem immoral. The Catholic Church expressly prohibits sex outside marriage and single men who violated the church cannon may be denied communion. Thus, a religious man should consult his priest, pastor, or religious elders before buying Viagra.
