Smoking Is In Someway Related To Hypertensive Heart Disease

Hypertensive heart disease is a condition where due to a sudden appearance of functional alterations of the right ventricle with or without dilatation of its cavity due to a sudden elevation of the pulmonary arterial pressure. The flow of blood within the pulmonary artery and the resistance which the vascular system offers are the two factors which decide the pressure on the pulmonary artery.

The pressure within the pulmonary artery can increase suddenly whenever, the blood flow of the pulmonary artery is increased and also when the resistance of the pulmonary vascular tissues increases suddenly. When there is a rupture of aortic valve, the blood flows directly to the pulmonary artery.

This increases the pressure of the artery as the blood flows with a force. Also, when there is a rupture of the interventricular septum due to an infarction, the blood flows directly into the pulmonary artery and increases the pressure. In the above mentioned two, the blood pressure is transmitted directly from the higher pressure system to a lower one.

If 60% of the pulmonary arterial section is occluded, the right ventricles will dilate and the output of left ventricles may be reduced consequently.

Hypertensive heart disease patients are always in a life-threatening condition as congestive heart failure is one of the possible results of hypertensive heart disease. Shortness of breath, cough with blood, fatigue, and faintness, swelling of the feet and ankles and frequent urination at night are the symptoms of hypertensive heart disease.

Hypertensive heart disease may lead to congestive heart failure, ischemic heart disease and also hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. An echocardiogram, a chest X-ray, a coronary angiogram and a chest CT scan are the diagnosis methods for hypertensive heart disease. Diuretics, calcium channel blockers, angiotensin 2 receptor antagonists, direct vasodilators and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE) are the medications commonly used for hypertensive heart disease.

These medications reverse the left ventricular hypertrophy and prolong survival in patients with heart failure from hypertensive heart disease. Smoking may also be major cause of hypertensive heart disease in some cases. In addition to medication, losing weight, exercising, and a salt restricted diet would give better results in hypertensive heart disease patient.
