Generic Zantac Is 5 Times More Potent Than Cimetidine
An orally active drug having a bioavailability of 60-80%, Generic Zantac is one of the first class of highly efficacious drugs for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease. It is an antihistaminic that competitively inhibits the secretion of hydrogen ions in to the gastric acid thereby increasing the ph by decreasing its acidity.
An advantage of Generic Zantac over proton pump inhibitors is that the absorption of hydrogen antagonists is not interfered by the presence of food in the stomach. However it crosses the placenta and reaches milk which demands care while administering the drug to pregnant and lactating women.
The first drug of this class is cimetidine, which has anti androgenic action leading to gynecomastia, loss of libido, impotence and a decrease in the sperm count. But Generic Zantac does not have any anti androgenic action and also exhibits overall lower side effects compared to the other drugs of this class.
Generic Zantac is 5 times more potent than cimetidine and has a half life of 2-3 hour but produces a suppression of acid secretion for almost 24 hours by virtue of its high potency. It also has lower propensity to cause CNS effects because of its lesser permeability into brain.
