Generic Flagyl Is Ineffective In An Aerobic Environment

Initially introduced for trichomoniasis in 1959, metronidazole later on became the drug of choice as an amoebicide. Generic Flagyl is the brand name for metronidazole that is effective against both intestinal and extra intestinal amoebiasis. It is selective in action against the anaerobic microbes and acts by diffusing into the cell. After entering the cells, a sequence of redox reactions take place that interferes with the energy metabolism of the microbes. It is important to note that Generic Flagyl is ineffective in an aerobic environment.

Though well absorbed orally and metabolized in the liver, it has a half life of 8 hours. It also acquires therapeutic concentrations in vaginal secretion, semen, saliva and the cerebrospinal fluid.
