Dealing With Cholesterol With Generic Zocor And Generic Lipitor
Cholesterol is one of the important ingredients in maintaining good health. The level of serum cholesterol is one of the reliable indicators of health status. It is characteristically a steroid alcohol that requires a continuous supply for maintaining cell membranes, modulating its fluidity, synthesis of bile acids, steroid hormones and vitamin D. For these functions to be met, the body requires a complex series of transport, biosynthetic and regulatory mechanisms. Liver is the central organ for these functions.
Cholesterol in our body is of two main types that can be said as good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. LDL or low density lipoproteins cholesterol is supposed to be bad cholesterol because it is associated with deposition of fat in the heart and great vessels. HDL or high density lipoproteins cholesterol does the reverse of this. It goes away from the heart to the liver where it is metabolized. So a total cholesterol/ HDL ratio is developed to predict CHD risk. A ratio of less than 3.5 has been recommended as a clinical goal for CHD prevention.
We have two main sources of cholesterol- through diet and by intrinsic mechanisms. Dietary sources vary from person to person. But the intrinsic mechanism is the same.
In the recent past, it has been identified that an increased serum cholesterol level is associated with increased risk of myocardial infarction and other coronary artery diseases. Changes in dietary practices and life style changes is an important predisposing factor. In the previous century, the major health problem was communicable diseases. With the wide spread vaccination programs and development of essential medicines, the risk of communicable diseases has come down drastically but the risk of non communicable diseases has gone up. This is called the epidemiological transition.
Increased consumption of Trans fatty acids, saturated fat and empty calories has increased the serum cholesterol level. On the other hand, our daily activities require lesser calorie expenditure compared to the past. This is because most of our work has been taken care of machines except thinking.
Studies show that there is a triangular relationship between habitual diet, blood cholesterol lipoprotein levels and coronary heart disease. Cultural differences too influence the cholesterol levels and the subsequent incidence of CHD. In Japan, the incidence of CHD is the lowest as the cholesterol level is low whereas in Finland, the incidence of CHD is the highest and the cholesterol levels are also very high.
Cholesterol reduction must be aimed at two main objectives:
Reduce the level of LDL cholesterol
Maintain the HDL cholesterol and other lipid stores in the body.
This can be done in three ways:
Drugs: These are mainly statin drugs that inhibit the intrinsic mechanism of cholesterol synthesis namely Zocor and Lipitor and their brand equivalents like Generic Zocor and Generic Lipitor.
Dietary changes: Avoid the consumption of junk food or empty calories. Increase the consumption of poly unsaturated fatty acids.
Life style modification: This is aimed at burning out the extra fat either through daily activities or through work outs
