Conflicting Claims about Viagra in the Medical Community

Viagra is not only controversial in the political realm but in the medical community as well. We have heard news stories of drug companies battling out patent rights against each other and against generic drugs makers. We heard stories about different tactics of drug companies to extend their patent rights and dragging Chinese drug manufacturers to court for selling cheaper counterfeit. Not only that, drug companies are busy lobbying congress for lesser restrictions on drug advertisements and reminding Congress that they should respect Freedom of Speech. The advertisement campaigns added some political tinge when Pfizer hired former Kansas governor Bob Dole to promote the blue pill.

The benefits, dosage computations, side-effects, and contraindications are still carefully debated and researched. Depending on what you are reading, the enumerations of benefits can be as low as three to as many as twenty, and the enumeration for side-effects can be as few as five to as many as thirty. Promoters of the drugs include erectile dysfunction, pulmonary arterial hypertension, jet lag problems, and altitude sickness as conditions that can be remedied by Viagra, while the critics limit the benefits and bloat the side-effects. Critics include grave conditions like blindness and heart attacks as possible complications from ordinary use and overdose, not to mention inclusion of the following in the enumeration for side effects; abdominal pain, tachycardia, back pain, palpitation, drug addiction, photosensitivity, blurred vision and facial edema.

NAION (nonarteritic anterior ischemic optical neuropathy) is currently debated as whether it is a side effect of Viagra usage. There are numerous studies by resident ophthalmologists and consultant level ophthalmologists but these studies are fueled by popular culture and biases are observed. Aside from that, some of the studies are conflicting and researchers do not give a definite conclusion ' they seem to convince others to move the study further. We may have to wait for some years before the medical communities can finally resolve this issue.

Side-effects like renal damage, heart problem, facial edema and drug addiction are products of popular culture but there are no definite conclusive studies linking Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs with such conditions.

In the field of sports, whether Viagra should be banned in future competitions is much subject of debate. Controversies are merely fueled by high profile admissions of Viagra users to enhance performance. The sports committees have yet to decide whether to include sildenafil citrate in their lists of banned substances and substrates.

Women are also waiting for more conclusive studies of the possible use of Viagra as cure for their female versions of sexual dycfuntions. The two primary studies (study published in the February 1999 issue of the Journal of American Medical Association vs. the study of Dr. Jennifer Berman of the Boston University's Women Health Clinic) are conflicting. One claims that Viagra remedies sexual dysfunction of women while the other concludes that Viagra has a placebo effect. The best thing to do is still read good literature about Viagra before you buy viagra online.
